This is a tip, not a full post/instruction/how to thing. A single simple action that might help you out.

And that is: read your dialogue.

Except, only your dialogue. Ignore all the actions, expressions. Just read the spoken words.

Although in real life, dialogue is accompanied by actions, those actions aren’t accompanied by narration. So if when spoken out loud, isolated from the narrator, it sounds weird and off, it might require some revision.

On that note, do remember that we pretty much all sounds awkward when speaking to people for the first time, or if we’re nervous or any number of reasons. All of your dialogue doesn’t need to be perfect, I have a post about that if you want more info.
